The U.S. Celebrates Its 250th Anniversary
This year there have been two major railroad stories. The largest, of course, has been
the coast-to-coast journey across the United States by the Union Pacific "Big Boy." The other
has been the 60+ diesel and steam locomotives that have marked the 250th celebration
by sporting a custom-painted red/white/blue scheme --- And, there might yet be a few more to join
the celebration. Take a look.
Whatever Happened To Australia's Alcos
The Alco name has been part of the Australian locomotive lexicon ever since the first diesel-electric
power reached the "Land Down Under" in 1953. For decades, Alcos have worked in mainline freight,
passenger, and heavy-haul ore service. Interestingly though, very few were actually built in
either of the company's two North American manufacturing plants -- Schenectady, NY and Montreal,
Quebec. Moreover, very few were of the four-axle variety. Follow this link to lern more about
Aussie Alcos.
EMDs on Alco Trucks
Every once-in-a-while we reach for something outside our comfort zone; this month's profile
on EMD locomotives that ride on AAR Type-B trucks is one of those occasions.

Art's Album is intended to be an on-line resource consisting of past Art Peterson articles and
images that reflect development and change within the railroading industry primarily during the 20th
Century. It centers on a collection of short photo-essays that feature the lens work of several
different raifan photographers. Most of the material is drawn from the Kramble-Peterson Archives.
